Betty is the creator of Gardenalia, and her greatest passion is creating and defining spaces with plants. After all, she has horticulture in her roots. Her great-grandfather emigrated from England in the early 19th century to work as a grower on the North Shore of Boston. Managing greenhouses and the estates of Nahant, he specialized in the growth and care of Orchids, Roses, and Acacias.
At a very young age, Betty began working with plants and became preoccupied with horticulture. She studied Botany and Life Sciences at The Evergreen State College in the Pacific Northwest. An apprenticeship in the building trades in the Northwest led to Journeyman’s status in the Piledrivers, Millwrights and Bridgebuilders Union. Here, she learned about changing landscapes on a large scale.
This work, combined with her passion for plants, led Betty to study Landscape and Garden Design. She opened her first Landscape Design business in Seattle in 1990.

Wyatt Melius is Co-Owner of Gardenalia. He has been a Phipps Master Gardener since 2007 and a horticultural coordinator for the Phipps Master Gardener Board, has completed the Penn State Arboriculture course, and has been gardening for most of his life.
Through Gardenalia, Wyatt focuses on sustainable landscaping and gardening. He’s inspired to change the world’s gardening practices one property at a time.
